September – Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month – is a pivotal time to deepen our understanding of this disease and share crucial information with the women in our lives. Ovarian cancer is a significant threat to women’s health, and being well-informed can lead to empowered decisions.

As with any cancer, the key to effectively managing this disease lies in early detection. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the risk factors associated with ovarian cancer and explore ways to reduce these risks.

 Risk Factors: 

• Age: The risk increases as women get older, especially after menopause.
• Family History: A family history of ovarian or breast cancer heightens vulnerability.
• Reproductive History: Women who never carry a pregnancy or have their first full-term pregnancy after 35 have a higher risk.
• Hormone Replacement Therapy:  The risk increases with long-term use of hormone replacement therapy after menopause.
• Diet: Obesity increases the risk.

 Tips to Reduce Risk: 

• Stay physically active
• Maintain a healthy weight
• Eat more whole grains, lean proteins, fruits and vegetables
• Recognize any changes or symptoms and consult a healthcare professional promptly
• Speak to your doctor to schedule regular gynecologic check-ups
