Don’t Get Burned by the Summer Sun
July 2024
Ah, summertime. It’s time to enjoy more daylight in the evenings, vegetables fresh from the garden and sunshine.
Now, about that sunshine.
You can indeed get a sunburn any time of year, but it’s especially true in the summer. That’s because the sun’s UV emissions are most intense during the warmer months. Also, we’re spending more time outside with fewer layers of clothing, so those UV rays have more “real estate” to wreak havoc.
How can you protect yourself while enjoying all that summer has to offer?
☀️ Wear sunscreen
According to the Centers for Disease Control, sunscreen should be broad-spectrum and at least SPF 15. Always apply sunscreen before you go outside, even when it’s cloudy or cool, and reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating. It’s also important to always check the expiration date before use.
☀️ Wear sunglasses
Most sunglasses sold in the U.S. meet the requirements of blocking UVA and UVB rays. They also help reduce the risk of developing cataracts and protect the vulnerable skin around your eyes.
☀️ Wear a hat
Choose a hat made with tightly woven material, such as canvas. Straw hats have holes through which light can penetrate. Make sure your hat’s brim shades your face, ears and the back of your neck. If you’re wearing a baseball cap, apply sunscreen to the back of your neck and ears.
☀️ Made in the shade
Shade is the ultimate protection outside! Still, ensure you wear sunscreen or protective clothing, even in the shade.
