Are you ready for hurricane season 2024?
June 2024
Hurricane season runs from June to November for the Atlantic region. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center predicts a near-normal Atlantic season this year. Whether or not that prediction proves true, we all need to prepare each year for the possibility of hurricanes or tropical storms affecting us.
The National Weather Service has released these guidelines to consider when preparing for the six-month storm season:
What is your risk? Hurricanes, wind and water hazards can happen wherever you live, so it is important to prepare for how to handle them.
Develop an evacuation plan. Find out if you live in a hurricane evacuation zone or in a home that would be considered unsafe during a hurricane. Follow all evacuation orders and be prepared to leave immediately. Also, be sure to have a plan for your pets since local shelters will not accept them.
Assemble disaster supplies. Gather all of your supplies at the start of the season. You will need supplies not just for the duration of the storm but also for its aftermath. You need enough non-perishable food, plus water and medicine, for each person to last at least a week. Radios, batteries and phone chargers are also necessities.
Get an insurance check-up. Follow up with your insurance company to make sure you have homeowner’s insurance to repair or replace your home, should it be destroyed. Also check on your car and boat coverage.
Strengthen your home. The best way to strengthen your home in preparation of a storm is to trim surrounding trees, cover windows with proper window coverings, bring in loose outdoor items, secure all doors, and move your car to a safe location.
Complete your written hurricane plan. Write down your plan to avoid mistakes and ensure that everyone in your home is prepared.
