International Infection Prevention Week
October 2024
October 13-19 is International Infection Prevention Week. Observed each third week of October, this week is dedicated to highlighting the crucial role of infection prevention in improving patient safety. The theme for 2024, “Moving the Needle on Infection Prevention,”Ā underscores the importance of our collective efforts in this area. š
For individuals, the following tips can help reduce the spread of infection:
- Wash Hands Regularly: Encourage proper handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating, after using the restroom, or after coughing or sneezing.
- Use Hand Sanitizer: When soap and water aren’t available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
- Disinfect Frequently Touched Surfaces: Regularly clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces like doorknobs, light switches, and mobile devices.
- Practice Respiratory Etiquette: Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing to prevent airborne particles.
- Stay Home When Sick: If you feel unwell, avoid going to public places to prevent spreading germs to others.
- Maintain Physical Distance: Keeping a safe distance from others, especially during cold and flu season, can limit the transmission of infections.
- Get Vaccinated: Stay updated with recommended vaccines to protect yourself and others.
- Stay Informed: Follow local health guidelines and stay updated on ways to prevent the spread of infectious diseases in your area.
In addition to the tips above, healthcare professionals help keep infection at bay with the following:
- Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear gloves, masks, gowns, and eye protection when interacting with patients, especially those with contagious conditions.
- Sterilization of Equipment: Ensure that medical tools and equipment are properly sterilized and disinfected between uses.
- Isolation Protocols: Implement isolation precautions for patients with highly contagious infections, such as airborne, droplet or contact isolation.
- Proper Waste Disposal: Dispose of medical waste, such as used needles, gloves, and contaminated materials, in designated biohazard containers.
- Cleaning Patient Areas: Regularly clean and disinfect patient rooms, including high-touch surfaces, to maintain a sterile environment.
- Safe Injection Practices: Use sterile syringes and needles for each injection and avoid multi-dose vials whenever possible to prevent cross-contamination.
- Antibiotic Stewardship: Carefully prescribe antibiotics to prevent the development of antibiotic-resistant infections.
- Education and Training: Continuously educate themselves and their colleagues on the latest infection prevention protocols and guidelines from health authorities.
