Staying Safe in Summer’s Heat

June 2023

With the beginning of summer this month, we can expect long, hot days with exceptionally high temperatures. Even if you do not plan to spend the day at the beach, or taking a hike on your favorite nature trail, you still need to know how to stay safe in hot weather during your regular, day-to-day activities.

The American Red Cross has steps people can follow to stay safe when it’s hot outside.

  • Hot cars can be deadly. Never leave children or pets in your vehicle. The inside temperature can easily reach 120 degrees.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Avoid caffeine or alcohol.
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Dark colors absorb the sun’s rays.
  • Slow down, stay indoors, and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
  • Check on those who do not have air conditioning. Check on animals frequently.
  • Excessive heat can lead to sunburn, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

If someone is exhibiting signs of heat exhaustion, move them to a cool place, and give them small amounts of water to drink. If someone experiences heat stroke, call 911 immediately. For more information about heat safety, visit redcross.org.
